Welcome to Running After Balance! I’m Kennedy. I live in Toronto, where I can often be found running, eating, cooking, writing, and drinking wine – probably not all at once.

I started this blog in March 2010 as a way to document my journey towards a more balanced, holistic lifestyle. Since then, I trained for and completed my first half-marathon. I also broadened my culinary horizons and eating habits, developing a true love for home-cooking as a result.

I credit blogging with helping me discover my true passion in life: to help people heal or stay healthy with real, nutritious food.

In fall 2010, I made a major decision – to quit my full-time job in communications and return to school to study holistic nutrition. When I graduate in early 2012, I will be a Registered Holistic Nutritionist – basically, my dream job. And if it weren’t for blogging, I’m not sure I’d have gotten here.

In spring 2009, I took the trip of a lifetimeI backpacked around Europe for three months with my younger brother. It was an absolutely incredible experience. As someone who had never left North America, and taken exactly two flights in her entire life, this was a HUGE deal. Along with visiting 14 countries, seeing hundreds of famous sights, learning tons about each country’s history and meeting a lot of fantastic people, I ate amazing food. Seriously amazing, fresh, locally-grown, nutritious, melt-in-your-mouth, REAL food.

It opened my eyes to the kind of garbage that we often pass off as ‘food’ here in Canada.
While I consider myself to be a pretty healthy eater, I’m far from perfect. I am, however, a lot more aware of what I’m putting in my body. And I’ve developed a desire to cook more of my meals from scratch in an effort to reduce my intake of harmful toxins while boosting my intake of fresh, nutritious foods. Plus, I get a real sense of accomplishment when I cook. That’s why one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2010 was to cook a new recipe at least once a week. I stuck with it for a good four months, and now it’s become more a ritual than a goal.

Then there’s the running.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a runner. I was active – I swam, skated, danced, and played soccer. But I could never stick with running for more than a week or so. By the time I reached adulthood, I just assumed it wasn’t for me.

In October 2009, a coworker convinced me to train for a 10K with her. It was an amazing experience for me, and in just 10 short weeks, I had turned into an addict. I finished my first ever race, the 10.8K Egg Nog Jog, in 1:06, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Now, a year later, I’ve run four more races, including another 10K (in 59:00!) and a half-marathon. I’m even considering taking on the daunting distance of a full marathon someday in the not-too-distant future. I think it’s safe to say the running bug has bit me. Hard.
